Que honda en Honduras?

I just got back from Honduras on a quick 3 day exploratory trip. I went down with Lee Gabriel and Rick Olsen from my church to look into building supplies and details about building a house for the Chicas, a family sent out by our church to serve with Teen Missions Intl. This was also a step of faith for me as Kirsten and I are seeking God's purpose and will for our lives. This trip proved to be very revealing and fruitful. The Lord was obviously with us.

The cabin I stayed in while at the camp was very rustic. Lee and Rick's cabins were more finished with tile floors and Rick's even had a TV and mini-fridge. I can now see the reason why the Lord wanted me to stay in the rustic cabin with bare cement floors, spiders and ants. It was to get over the comforts and to focus on the needs. I realize that I don't need the comforts and that my purpose for being there was not to be comfortable. Yet, after killing my nightly 5-6 large spiders before bed (so they didn't drop on me in the middle of the night), I slept so soundly that I laid my head down and opened my eyes and it was time to get up.

The ministry there in Honduras is incredible. They are training teenagers to be missionaries through their self-sustaining camp. Lives are being changed through a handful of students who have discovered the Lord's call upon their lives. But the Chicas, Chico and Kathy, are the only staff running the camp. The students do help in many ways such as working the fields, preparing meals, and maintaining the grounds for example. But Chico and Kathy truly need help to move beyond mere existence. At this point they live hand to mouth and cannot pay certain bills so they just do without certain things (like running water). They need someone that can bring in another income source, plan beyond one month and just help with day-to-day operations that are put on hold because of needing to tend to the students and vital operations of the camp. It simply is too much for only two people to do.

The ministry (the act of ministry, not the facilities) is flourishing. There are people being brought into the Kingdom every week through the students and the Chicas. Relationships have already been established and the Chicas are trusted in the community and local villages. But where do Kirsten and I fit in? The Lord told me in so many ways that He has prepared me to help the Chicas and this ministry. Whether that is longterm or short, I do not know. All I know is God is tugging at my heart strings and is asking, "will you go?" My answer of course is 'yes'. Kirsten and I are now planning a trip, either before our church trip or with our church to go together with the boys and experience it as a family. I pray the Lord will continue to reveal His perfect will to us as we obediently follow. Thank you Jesus for showing us the way!
